🌸 Week 41 of Pregnancy

“At this point, your baby seems VERY comfortable staying inside 😭🍼”

Welcome to:

✨ Week 41

And honestly?
 You’re probably:
 👀 analyzing every cramp
📱 answering “Still pregnant?” texts all day
😭 and officially DONE with being pregnant

That’s completely normal 🤍

⏳ Going Past Your Due Date

In most pregnancies:
✔ it’s usually safe to wait until 41 weeks

But after 41 weeks:
even though risks are still small…
they do start to increase slightly 👀

⚠️ Risks That Increase After 41 Weeks

These may include:

  • higher chance of caesarean birth
  • baby needing neonatal care
  • slightly increased risk of stillbirth or neonatal death

💡 This is why your doctor or midwife will monitor you more closely now.

🤰 Extra Monitoring

If pregnancy continues past your due date:
✔ you may have extra appointments
 ✔ CTG monitoring
 ✔ ultrasound checks
 ✔ fetal movement monitoring

Your healthcare team will discuss the safest options with you 💙

💉 Induction of Labour

1 in 51\text{ in }51 in 5

Around:

✨ 1 in 5 births

are induced.

This means:
using medications to start labour artificially.

👀 Membrane Sweep

Your doctor or midwife may first offer:

membrane sweep

This is:
 ✔ an internal examination
✔ designed to encourage labour hormones naturally

💡 It may feel uncomfortable
 but:
✔ does not harm you or your baby

💊 Prostaglandin

You may then receive:

prostaglandin

As:

  • gel
  • tablet
  • or pessary

This helps:
 ✔ soften the cervix
 ✔ open it
 ✔ start contractions

💧 Breaking the Waters

If your waters don’t break naturally:
✔ your doctor may break them manually

💉 Syntocinon Drip

Sometimes a medication called:

syntocinon

is given through a drip to:
 ✔ strengthen contractions
 ✔ speed up labour

⚖️ Things to Consider About Induction

✔ induction may reduce the need for caesarean birth
❗ but it can sometimes feel:

  • longer
  • more painful
    than spontaneous labour

Some women may also need:
 ✔ forceps
 ✔ or ventouse delivery

💡 Ask as many questions as you need 👀

💉 RSV Vaccination

If you haven’t had the RSV vaccine yet:
✔ it can still be given before labour

It helps protect your baby from:

  • bronchiolitis
  • severe chest infections

⚠️ Symptoms at Week 41

The main symptom now?

😭 official pregnancy frustration

But you may also experience:

  • Braxton Hicks contractions
  • sleeping problems
  • stretch marks
  • bleeding gums
  • round ligament pain
  • piles
  • headaches
  • backache
  • heartburn
  • constipation and bloating
  • leg cramps
  • feeling hot
  • dizziness
  • swelling
  • urine infections
  • vaginal discharge or infections
  • skin changes
  • acne
  • thicker hair

✔ plus:

  • mood swings 😭
  • cravings
  • leaking breasts
  • stronger sense of smell

👶 What Does Your Baby Look Like?

Your baby now weighs around:
 ✔ 3–4 kg

About the size of:
 🎃 a small pumpkin
 or 🍉 a watermelon 😄

🧬 Development

The rapid growth stage is now mostly finished 👀

Your baby should now be:
 ✔ fully developed
 ✔ chubby
✔ ready for life outside the womb

👶 Overdue Baby Skin

Babies born after their due date may have:
 ✔ dry skin
 ✔ peeling skin
 ✔ red skin

This usually happens because they lose their:

✨ vernix

the creamy protective coating on their skin.

🧴 Don’t Rush to Moisturise 👀

The peeling usually improves naturally within a few days 💙

🧘‍♀‍ Important Things This Week

✔ enjoy maternity leave 😄
 ✔ continue pelvic floor exercises
 ✔ attend antenatal classes
 ✔ reduce caffeine
 ✔ continue vitamins
 ✔ stay gently active
 ✔ eat healthy meals
 ✔ focus on emotional wellbeing
✔ think about contraception after birth
 ✔ ask about newborn screening

🍞 Eating at Week 41

❌ You still do NOT need to “eat for two” 😄

✔ only around 200 extra calories daily

That’s roughly:
🍞 2 slices of wholemeal toast

😔 Emotional Wellbeing

Feeling:

  • frustrated?
  • emotional?
  • exhausted?
  • like pregnancy will never end? 😭

✔ Completely understandable 🤍

But don’t keep those feelings to yourself.

Talk to:

  • your doctor
  • midwife
  • partner
  • or someone you trust

💫 Baby Movement

Even though your baby is bigger:
✔ movements should still stay regular

🚨 Reduced movements should NEVER be ignored.

🚨 Call Your Doctor Urgently If:

  • movements decrease
  • bleeding occurs
  • waters break
  • severe headache develops
  • blurred vision happens
  • severe abdominal pain develops
  • strong regular contractions begin

We know these final days can feel:
 😭 endless
